I have no doubt Okie was written in a thick cloud of dope but I wonder if the trickster was pandering knowing the joke was a private one... Must be tough to be a pop star...

Jim Ford sounds promising and I'll have a look around for some of his shit... You should keep an eye out for any and all Wannabe Texans...

Supposedly Okie was written in a thick cloud of dope smoke. I see Merle Haggard as basically apolitical but playing a sort of coyote/trickster role with his persona, at least with respect to the culture wars; setting up and disturbing expectations and generally casting the mythology of himself everywhere. It's one of the things that really appeals to me about him.

You should check out Jim Ford sometime.

That's probably quite true. I'm still a little puzzled about Haggard's own protestations against the bygone hippie flock considering his own history are just as anti-social, selfish and "Un-American" as dropping acid and being a doofus. When I saw him in Oakland a year or two back he claimed that "Okie from Muskogee" was actually written about his dad's perspective, not his. Last I heard Merle's dad died when Merle was a pup so...

I think "hippie" is better understood in this context as conoting something like what "hipster" conotes now, although I can't imagine MH finding much common ground with the dredlocked teen runaway set either.
